FAQs
Common questions about private occupational therapy
-
What is Occupational Therapy under Medicare?
Occupational Therapy under Medicare is available through a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan, which is arranged by your GP.
If you have a chronic medical condition (lasting 6 months or more), your GP may refer you to an Occupational Therapist as part of a broader care plan involving multiple health professionals.
Occupational Therapy sessions under Medicare focus on helping you improve your ability to manage everyday activities. This may include support with:
- Daily living tasks (e.g. personal care, household activities)
- Improving independence and function
- Equipment or home environment recommendations
- Strategies to manage physical or cognitive challenges
Medicare provides a rebate for up to 5 allied health sessions per calendar year, which are shared across all services included in your care plan (e.g. Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology, Speech Pathology).
It’s important to note that Medicare typically covers part of the session fee, meaning there may be an out-of-pocket cost.
To access Occupational Therapy under Medicare, you will need to visit your GP to determine your eligibility and obtain a referral.
-
Am I eligible for Medicare-funded Occupational Therapy?
Some people may be eligible for Medicare-funded Occupational Therapy through a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan arranged by their GP. This plan is typically available for individuals who have a chronic medical condition that has been present, or is expected to be present, for at least six months and requires support from multiple health professionals.
Your GP will assess whether you meet the eligibility criteria and, if appropriate, can provide a referral for allied health services, including Occupational Therapy.
-
How many sessions can I access per year?
We offer flexible service delivery in your preferred setting - whether that's in your home, at your child's kindergarten or school, or in our clinic. We work with you to determine what environment will be most beneficial for your child's progress.
-
Do I need a referral for Medicare Occupational Therapy?
Yes. To access Medicare rebates for Occupational Therapy, you will need a referral and care plan from your GP under a Chronic Disease Management Plan.
Once the plan is in place, your GP can refer you to an Occupational Therapist. Please bring a copy of your referral to your first appointment so we can process your Medicare rebate.
